Dear readers and contributors,</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
If you ask any number of people what December calls to their
minds, many will say the holidays and family time. Farmers in the Artibonite,
however, will say that it’s time to sow black turtle beans in the ground. For
us at HTRIP, December marks the end of one more year of accomplishments, which
of course includes measurable growth for the trees that we have planted in the mountains of the Artibonite region. Throughout this year, we have helped our sixty HTRIP communities in
diverse ways: by providing them with tools for their tree nurseries, building
cisterns to catch water, sponsoring different <i>konbits</i> (community work groups),
and organizing monthly training sessions about environmental care. Even though
we have had some changes in the management of the project and at Hôpital Albert
Schweitzer (HAS), our commitment to improve livelihoods of the people living in
the mountainous areas in the Artibonite stronger than ever. <br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Challenges such as drought, hurricanes, and flooding slowed down some of our activities through the year of 2012. For example,
tree distribution and plantation activities in some communities were delayed. Farmers
in many areas had to deal with the loss of crops and livestock suffered due to
hurricane damage. Still, we have managed to keep the project going by
completing all the monthly training sessions for our HTRIP community leaders
and participants. We have even worked to strengthen the capacity of our staff, introducing
seminars led by agronomist and Haitian native, Rony Horat, who joined the HTRIP
team in November. Last month we had a seminar about grafting and January’s
seminar focused on the cultivation of yams and other tubers that enjoy shady
areas. <br />

Rony is currently engineering several agricultural
strategies that will enable the project to go forward with one of its primary
goals: improving agricultural production in the mountainous areas of the
Artibonite where the environment is severely degraded. Rony’s first strategy is
to emphasize the cultivation of upper land: shade tolerant coffee in the
district of Verettes (which includes the HTRIP communities such as Barbe,
Laborne, and Remonsen), where the high elevation facilitates the growing of
coffee trees. His other approach supports the shade-tolerant crops program that
HTRIP has been leading since 2011. These two plans require four levels of
implementation in order to create a good ecological model for the long term. We
at HTRIP will keep you, our readers and supporters in the loop regarding the
development of those four steps throughout the year of 2013. <br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As we alluded to before in this letter, HTRIP has been
promoting the yam as a good shade-tolerant crop that has the ability to climb
trees to the top without harming the trees’ growth. By visiting older HTRIP
communities such as Source Dupon, Titon, and Goden where the trees are now
quite large and tall, it is possible to envision a symbiotic relationship
between the shade and height of the HTRIP trees and many shade-grown crops like
yam, taro and passion fruit. However, we are focusing on the yam because it is
already a popular crop in Haiti; yams can be consumed in many ways and it is a
big money-maker in local markets. We like yams so much, that we even have a
place in the Artibonite called <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Terre
Igname, </i>which means “Yams’ Land” in English!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We also have started with the idea of introducing HTRIP
gardens in the residences on the HAS campus. This effort will serve two
purposes: to experiment with shade-grown crops, and to beautify the HAS campus.
This month we have planted eighty-one seedlings of cabbage using Dr. Charbel
Bien Aime’s back yard. With this trial planting, we will be able to see how
well cabbage can be grown with limited sunlight. <br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Although this is just a sampling of some of our latest achievements, we are proud of all the activities that we have done during this
year, and very thankful of all the support that we have received from our
generous supporters and followers. It is with confidence and excitement that we
are welcoming 2013, as we have already set up our main goals for our nurseries.

<br />
Dear contributors,<br />
<br />
October has been quite a busy month for HTRIP as the staff had to follow up on some projects and start planning for nurseries production. For instance, all of our communities have already put up compost piles and follow ups are being performed by the technicians to make sure that everything is working as expected. We have also started cutting the small recycle water bags that we use for seedlings production in our central nursery in Deschapelles as well as in the extended HTRIP communities’ tree nurseries. We have finished collecting all the broken tools in our communities, and have also made an inventory of tools to be purchased in Port-au-Prince next month. Our current participants at the monthly educational sessions have so far received training on how to take care of a tree, to put up a compost pile, and to make a successful tree nursery.<br />

Along all its routine activities, HTRIP had a big change in leadership because of Ross Bernet’s departure after a year of service as project manager. Melissa Sanon took over the program’s management at the start of the month. Melissa is a Haitian woman who studied Agriculture Business for Export at Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California. Her studies were funded by the USAID (United States Agency for International Development) under a program called SEED (Scholarship for Education and Economic Development). A nice farewell dinner was hosted at the Mellon’s house to say thank you to Ross for his great work in the Artibonite. It was also a nice opportunity for the HTRIP staff to formally meet Louis Martin, the new CEO of the hospital, and also gather everybody from the SCI-ICS (Integrated Community Services) department together. In addition, some members of the staff had this great opportunity to go to the Dominican Republic with Ross Bernet. Despite the inclement weather brought by hurricane Sandy, the trip went wonderfully as expected. The technicians who went on the trip got to visit Santo Domingo for the first time which allows them to compare the ecosystems of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Hurricane Sandy’s heavy rains and strong winds affected several bridges in the Artibonite and destroyed many agricultural fields. Also, a few flat areas flooded, and in some cases farmers lost significant numbers of livestock. Our HTRIP tree plots have remained resilient, but the strong wind from the hurricane broke some branches.<br />
<br />
During this month, Melissa gave a Power Point presentation at one of the routine morning medical conferences at the hospital’s library. The presentation was mostly focused on the Shade Crops program that HTRIP is leading in the old communities. She also made sure to educate people about the relationship between the mission of the hospital and the work that HTRIP is doing in the surrounding mountains in the Artibonite. It is not always obvious to people how ecological problems such as erosion and deforestation affect health and well-being, particularly for population with limited resources. This presentation aimed to show the connection to the doctors, nurses and technicians attending the meeting. Since this presentation, many people who work at the hospital have been asking to go out on a tour someday with HTRIP in order to get a closer look at the work that we have been doing in the Artibonite.<br />
<br />
The HTRIP staff was also pleased to give a nice tour in Koupwa to LeGrand Mellon, David Zawadski, and Luquesse Belizaire. It was their first time visiting an HTRIP locality. In fact, they were amazed by the great work that we have been doing in the Artibonite. Just by looking at some incredible tall Spanish cedar trees, LeGrand got inspired by new ways she could collaborate with the work that HTRIP is doing in. For example, she was wondering if it will not be a good idea for HTRIP to plant cotton. It will indeed be a good idea to introduce cotton in the HTRIP communities that could grow it. It will also be an additional source of income for our farmers since LeGrand will be willing to buy cotton from them. Once again thank you to our dear contributors for their great support in making HTRIP what it is today. We also want to thank Ross Bernet for his collaboration with the HTRIP staff, and wish him success in his new adventures.<br />
<br />
Thank You,<br />

Chris died at home with his family, at the age of 88 years. Chris was first and foremost a family man, but he was also a US army veteran and former POW, a pioneer in the forest products industry. To us, he was a loyal friend and colleague, a gentleman and a true benefactor to thousands of Haitians as founder of the Haiti Timber Re-Introduction Project (HTRIP). HTRIP currently operates in 59 communities in Haiti with 4,000 farmers and landowners, who have planted over 892,000 trees. Christian Snavely and his inspirational dedication to HTRIP left a remarkable legacy to our cause and to the children of Haiti. His good work will continue to grow for generations, but he will certainly be missed.<br />

September has been an exciting month for everyone involved in HTRIP. Our mountain farmers found consistent afternoon showers which will help the roots of their recently planted trees have the strength to endure the upcoming dry season. The HTRIP staff continued a tradition team building at Indigo beach. Finally, HTRIP supporters in Pittsburgh and the Program Manager were invited to a wonderful Gala featuring great music, food, and art.<br />
A tradition started by Starry Sprenkle in 2006, the entire HTRIP staff gather at Indigo beach to partake in team building exercises and perhaps more importantly an opportunity to escape the routine and enjoy a day at the beach together.
HTRIP participants entered their third lesson of the monthly education cycle which focuses on tree care. We continued compost-building konbits which will provide high-quality soil in preparation for this year’s tree nurseries.<br />
In order to maintain a positive relationship with all HTRIP communities, HTRIP provides a small amount of budgetary and advisory support for leaders from communities that are no longer engaged in monthly education sessions but wish to continue their relationship with HTRIP. A checkup meeting on the “graduated” leaders from the 2006-2007 community leaders who have formed an organization with monthly meetings independent of HTRIP revealed progress on their fruit tree nursery is coming along. <br />

The 12th annual H’Art and Soul of Haiti Gala was held at the WQED in Pittsburgh and welcomed over 400 Haiti enthusiasts. It was a great pleasure for the Program Manager to see the other side of the HTRIP program and our great stateside support network. Melissa Sanon, HTRIP supervisor, was also given her first test running the project on a day-to-day basis and did a wonderful job.
As always, genuine thanks to each and every HTRIP support from all of down here in Deschapelles.<br />
Sincerely,<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><a href="http://deliciouspastries.bandcamp.com/">Delicious Pastries</a> are a pop outfit unencumbered by the fleeting dalliances of the new rock vogue. Forged in the fire of friendship over ten years ago, and galvanized by a deep love of the pop idiom, they create melodic vignettes as familiar as they are odd. The band makes a “self-aware brand of pop music, with sixties-era retro sensibilities, and a late-nineties delivery.” It is as if, <a href="http://www.pghmusicreport.com/2010/05/spotlight-pittsburgh-local-artist.html">as band members have explained</a>, they, “swallowed five decades of pop music in one sitting, and the result is an unbridled pop explosion.”</span></div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><b>Thank You Rosekind</b> is comprised of artists and musicians, Michael G. Bauer, Joel Chartkoff and Calpin Hoffman-Williamson. Developed from a concept by Bauer in 2009, Thank You Rosekind performs an ongoing series of songs expressing gratitude to people, places and things. The band has strived to create motivationally-based pop songs that highlight human achievement and positive functioning as a means to promote the continual thriving of individuals, families and communities. Critic Sarah Renee Lehrer-Graiwer describes their music as, “restrained, yet spaciously layered electro-pop dreamscapes that are simultaneously airy and watery, blissfully weightless and grounded in minimal bass lines. With titles like ‘Drive Your Dreams,’ ‘Be Bold,’ and ‘Emanation,’ this album <i>Attention Intention! </i>is effective for everyday happiness and enlightenment.”<span style="font: 11.0px Avenir LT Std;"> </span>TYR’s punchy optimism, paired with their infectious pop styling gives the band an irresistible energy that we are certain you’ll love! </span></div>

<br /><i>Downtown Rockers</i> features Tom <span>Tom</span> Club’s characteristic upbeat fusion of electro and funk. Chris Frantz explains, "We recorded the basic tracks soon after Tom <span>Tom</span> Club toured with the <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Psychedelic Furs</span></b> in
October of 2011 at our home studio. These tracks were built from
improvised jam sessions with Bruce Martin on keyboards and Pablo Martin
on guitar, Tina Weymouth on bass and Chris Frantz on drums. This is the
same way we began "Remain In Light" with <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Talking Heads</span></b></span><span style="color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt;">.
This time our only instruction to the other players was to keep the
parts simple with lots of space like Booker T. and the MGs would do."<br />
<br />The title track from the new album pays tribute to the many bands that created the downtown music scene in New York City in the 70's from The Velvet Underground to the Talking Heads. The song was mixed by <b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ed <span>Stasium</span></span></b>, who also recorded and mixed Talking Heads '77 and umpteen Ramones classics.<br /><br />Tom <span>Tom</span> Club was originally formed by <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Chris Frantz</span></b> and <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Tina Weymouth</span></b> in 1981. Graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design, they moved to New York City where they founded <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Talking Heads</span></b> as a trio with <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">David Byrne</span></b>.
Chris played drums, Tina played bass and David sang and played guitar.
In early 1981, Talking Heads took a hiatus after five years of touring
internationally and four studio albums, and Chris and Tina began the <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Tom <span>Tom</span> Club</span></b>.<br />
<br />When legendary reggae producer <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Lee “Scratch” Perry</span></b> failed
to show up for the scheduled recording sessions in the Bahamas,
Blackwell allowed Chris and Tina to produce the album themselves with
Jamaican engineer Steven Stanley. Tom <span>Tom</span> Club's first single was “Wordy <span>Rappinghood</span>,” an unusually original mix of schoolyard rap over a funky groove that went into the top of the charts in 17 countries. “<b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Wordy <span>Rappinghood</span></span></b>” turned out to be seminal in bringing mainstream attention to the new spirit of hip-hop. <br />
<br />The group’s second single was the remarkable “<b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Genius of Love</span></b>.”
Released in the UK before North America, the track was bubbling up in
the underground with dozens of unsolicited remixes and versions--most
notably, <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Grandmaster Flash</span></b>’s "It's Nasty/Genius of Love" in 1982—a massive hit in the clubs and on the R&B and dance charts, soon earning the Tom <span>Tom</span> Club debut a Gold sales award. In 1995, <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Mariah Carey</span></b> hit #1 with “Fantasy,” her version of “Genius of Love” featuring <span>Ol</span>’
Dirty Bastard rapping over the original instrumental track. “Genius of
Love” continues to be frequently sampled by various artists, from <span><b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Tupac</span></b></span><b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";"> <span>Shaku<span style="font-weight: normal;">r</span></span></span></b> to most recently, T.I. feat. <span>Fergie</span> and <a href="http://will.i.am/" target="_blank">will.i.am</a> of the <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Black Eyed Peas</span></b>.<br />
<br />Tom <span>Tom</span> Club continues to celebrate more than thirty
years as a band. Last year, they performed their timeless classic
“Genius of Love” on <b><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon</span></b>.” It was a flashback to one of the group’s earliest career <span class="il">highlights</span>
- playing the hit song on the highly popular TV show “Soul Train” back
in 1983 – at a time when it was in heavy rotation on urban radio
stations.<br />
<br />Last fall, Tom <span>Tom</span> Club rocked their first U.S. tour in 10 years and released ‘<i><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Genius of Live.</span></i>’ The album featured select tracks from classic album ‘<i><span style="font-family: "Helvetica","sans-serif";">Live At The Club House</span></i>’ as well as a various remixes by artists like <span>Ozomatli</span>, Kinky, Money Mark and The Pinker Tones.<br />
<br />In 2002, Frantz and Weymouth were inducted at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.<br /></span><br />

their importance to the soil, water, and people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was also a mix of emotion for all parties when HTRIP bid adieu to two incredibly beloved interns, Jack Devine and Angel Hertslet.</div>

A solar mango drier introduced by the Yale School of
Forestry really sparked the interest of Nursery Technician Petit-Joel “Gerard”
Alvarez.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The abundant yet short
mango season makes preservation seem an obvious response, but there is little
knowledge of drying mangoes in our area.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Without any firsthand knowledge myself, I was clear with Gerard that we
could proceed by trial and error.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>After working together on the first dozen mangoes, Gerard’s interest
carried him to cut and dry at least 100 more.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He was invited by a friend to a regional meeting of pastors
sponsoring agricultural products from around the Artibonite.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We worked together to put them in bags
with a simple label.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>After the
meeting, he happily remarked there were not enough mangoes to meet demand.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hopefully next year we will be able to
take even greater advantage of the short and sweet mango season.</div>

Bill and Cindy Swartz became Pittsburghers in 1979. The same year that Pittsburgh became known as The City of Champions, Bill joined the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine as a young plastic surgical faculty member. They raised two daughters, Barbara and Katy who graduated from Shadyside Academy and Ellis School, respectfully. Over the past 33 years, they have been involved in the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association, the Frick Historical and Art Museum as a trustee and the Pittsburgh Opera Association Board.<br />
<br />
Through Bill's hospital activities, both Cindy and Bill became aware of Ian & Lucy Rawson's involvement with HAS and supported the hospital financially. After the 2010 earthquake, however, Bill made his first trip and saw first-hand the incredible need for surgical support, both in personnel and supplies. Over the past three years, he has brought teams of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and operating assistants to Haiti. Twice a year they perform 50 or more surgeries, addressing a wide variety of plastic, orthopedic, and general surgical problems. To facilitate this effort, an organization of physicians was formed: the Physician Friends of HAS, which, while still in the formative stage, promises to expand the medical and surgical support of HAS physicians. To that end, one of the young Haitian surgeons will spend six weeks in Pittsburgh observing a wide variety of surgical cases and bring that increased knowledge back to HAS.Friends of HAS Haitihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03189286005444095330noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3530976347782541113.post-38520963491564486852012-06-05T12:31:00.003-07:002012-06-05T12:41:15.128-07:00The Tom Tom Club is Coming!<i><a href="http://www.friendsofhas.org/hartandsoul/Home.php3">H'Art & Soul of Haiti</a> is one of the major fundraisers of our year, but it is also our way of both sharing and celebrating all that we do with our community of friends. Last year was a celebratory year for <a href="http://www.tomtomclub.net/">The Tom Tom Club</a> - it marked their 30th year as a band.
Conceived during downtime from Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth’s other
band, Talking Heads, the group celebrates their anniversary by
playing shows around the world, reinforcing why their funky musical style has
been a staple of the dance music world since the early eighties. </div>

in the clubs and on the R&B and dance charts, soon earning the Tom Tom Club
debut a Gold sales award. In 1995, Mariah Carey hit #1 with “Fantasy,” her version of “Genius of Love” featuring
Ol’ Dirty Bastard rapping over the original instrumental track. “Genius of

Tina and Chris were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have

The Club House’ as well as a Latin alternative remix tribute to the smash hit,
“Genius Of Love” by such artists as Ozomatli and Money Mark. </div>

May
also brings the first rains of the wet season which means it’s time to start
planting trees in addition to our shade tolerant crops. The shade crop trials are taking place
in the demonstration plots of 15 HTRIP communities that have been with us since
at least 2008. The shade crop
trials are important for working with farmers to discover high value crops that
can be grown under the shade of their older trees that prohibit the continued
cultivation of the traditional corn and millet. Yams worked well in last year’s
pilot shade demonstration trial and are being accompanied this year by an
additional range of shade tolerant contenders including passion fruit, taro,
pumpkin, and various beans.</div>

Jack Devine left in the middle of his fourth month with
HTRIP. His last several weeks saw
an incredible drive to bring a honey producing bee box to the HTRIP repertoire.
Jack contacted a local carpenter familiar with bee boxes to construct one for
us. On his search for people
willing to get bees into the box, he found someone willing to sell a box with
bees already producing honey inside.
It is not very helpful to get us the box and then leave us without
direction, but luckily Jack is already planning his return trip for another
month with us before he starts at CMU in the Fall.<br />

Master’s thesis in Environmental Science.

Visiting the small community tree nurseries is one of the
greatest pleasures for the Project Manager. Each nursery has its own unique
feel and presence in a community. Some are at the heart of the community near the
church or school, whereas others are further removed. Some communities have better access to water and a
correspondingly greater number of healthy trees. At the modest subsidy of 1
gourde ($.025) per tree produced, it is hard to think of a more effective way
HTRIP spends money.</div>

our community nurseries grow up before our very eyes, and seen the start of the
rains that mark our busiest and most joyful time of year – the time to start
planting trees! But April was not without a touch of sadness as we were forced
to say goodbye to the much appreciated and incredibly hardworking intern Ruth
Portnoff.<br />

Our education cycle runs July through April.
At the end of those ten months, program participants who missed no more than
three lessons will graduate in our annual graduation ceremony the first week of
May and receive a graduation certificate and a germinated coconut tree to take
home to plant. This month’s lesson
continued last month’s discussion of agroforestry in addition to a review of
the previous nine month’s lessons.<br />
<br />
Ruth Portnoff was invited
down in large part to help provide the organization and knowledge necessary to
start HTRIP’s next phase of introducing shade tolerant crops that will thrive
beneath our closing canopies. She worked with each technician to identify 16
demonstration parcels from our early communities with sufficient shade to support
a different set of crops beyond the traditional sun-hungry corn and millet. We worked with the idea to give the
technicians as much control over this new experiment as possible, giving them
the responsibility to choose and purchase the seeds. According to the rains and the lunar cycle, yams were the
first crop to be planted and five successful <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">konbits </i>have already taken place.<br />

No one was happy to see Ruth depart just as
her plans were turning into plantings, but life calls and it called Ruth to
Uganada where she will continue working with ECHO on agricultural assessment in
rural areas. We wish you luck and that you will return to HTRIP again
someday. Although sad to see Ruth
go, Uma Bhandaram and Jack Devine carry on the role of HTRIP interns
dutifully. They both picked up
creole with incredible rapidity and have really enjoyed working with the HTRIP
technicians in all their tasks.
They have also been essential in helping prepare for the imminent May 1st
graduation ceremony.<br />
<br />
All of us here in
Deschappelles are ever thankful to the support of our donors that make this
work possible. We are also ever grateful for this year’s good fortune. We look
forward to the coming months of tree planting with much excitement.<br />

Dear Supporters,</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
March
could not have been any fuller. More than anything else, March has been a month
of many visitors. This was all on
top of the normal and increasingly busy HTRIP activities of continued soil
conservation, food distribution, taking on new communities, and planning
demonstration plot <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">konbits</i> in new
communities. The month concluded
on wet but happy note of more than a few light sprinkles – an appreciated
reminder that the annual rainy season will soon arrive and put an end to this
dusty dry spell. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The first visitor of the
month, Uma Bhandaram, is a fellow UCLA environmental science graduate and will
be with HTRIP for two months. Her
boss at an environmental consulting firm in southern California allowed this
Haitian hiatus because he is a firm believer in gaining international
experience, the benefits of travel and different world outlooks, and we could
not be any happier for it!The next group of visitors involved a little
more planning, but 20+ Yale school of Forestry masters students provided a
wonderful chance to show the program to a group of intelligent and motivated
students eager to help in any way possible. The class was divided into two groups; one focusing on
public health questions of the hospital and one focusing on HTRIP. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Within the forestry
group, Professor Gordon Geballe and I worked out three projects that could be
of benefit to both students and HTRIP. One group looked into possibilities for
the development of coffee production in the furthest reaching sixth section
communities of Barbes and Labon. The next group interviewed the HTRIP staff,
interns, myself, and anyone else they could get their hands onto to get an
understanding of how HTRIP works and provide feedback from a new perspective. The final group probably received more
than they bargained for when they offered to continue my UCLA undergraduate
honors thesis work. This involved
comparing Spanish Cedar tree growth from four 2006 communities and trying to
understand what local environmental factors might be causing the widely
differing growth rates between plots. This translated into four full days of
field word which they handled with impressive enthusiasm.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To fill the gap left by the Yale Students
departure, Lucy Rawson accompanied by some Pittsburgh and New York friends came down to spend time
learning about the program and creating a rich portfolio of videos and
photographs. They brought with
them a Gigapan – a device developed for the NASA Mars rover that takes a series
of hundreds of photographs and stitches them together to form one super high
resolution image. We started with
the Gigapan in Barbes, where at 3000 feet the highly detailed panoramic is sure to inspire wonder. We decided to take full advantage of
the trip and used this day to transport two 1000 gallon cisterns up to the
water short communities of Barbes and Labon. At the top of the water shed, these localities are
particularly hard hit during the dry season and getting enough drinking water
is a problem, much less trying to support a tree nursery. The cisterns might not be enough water
to support the 7000 trees we hope for from other communities, but it will be a
start. The cisterns were too bulky
to be transported by HTRIP’s land cruisers, but the French Red Cross lent us
their pickup truck which made easy work of the task. The driver deserves considerable
appreciation for making the four hour round trip twice in one day.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During this time, two
professors from Allegeny University also came to learn about the program and
make plans to send students down for a summer internship.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
March’s education session focused on
agroforestry. We have been fortunate to have Ruth Portnoff’s excellent advice
and organizational skills to help implement the first full round of shade
tolerant crop trials in demonstration plots that have become sufficiently
shaded out. Planting these crops
will start when the rains start.</div>

The end of the year was a little quieter for HTRIP’s Deschapelles activities. Tool distribution was completed, seed collection has begun, and community nursery work is well underway. As we prepare for the next phase of preparing for tree seedlings, the staff and our communities alike are able to take a moment to celebrate the end of year holidays. A hospital wide party for all HAS employees was a joyful occasion for the members of our staff. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times; font-size: small;"></span></div>

HTRIP could not have asked for a better gift than the near completion of our new central nursery. The 40-foot shipping container arrived this month that will serve as our new and secure tool and storage depot. The recently completed barbed wire fence reinforced with spiked plants help prevent the goats and chickens from nibbling on our tree seedlings that are ready to get going. A 250 gallon water drum hooked up to the main water line will make watering trees much easier than our previous location. And the covered meeting space is just waiting for the final protective paint job. </div>

<br />
This month was an exciting one as we continued our education program,
distributed tools to community nurseries, broke ground on our new
central nursery project, hosted many guests and visitors, and welcomed back a former intern to Deschapelles. This
month’s lesson covered tree nurseries, and HTRIP technicians taught
community participants about seed germination and care for tree
seedlings. They also covered general nursery management principles, like
laying out even rows of seedlings for better accounting, and new
communities selected a suitable location for their tree nurseries—as
near as possible to a water source (for watering seedlings during the
dry season), on a slight slope (so that water drains and seedlings do
not drown in the rainy season), and with a mixture of sun and shade (so
that trees can be acclimated and avoid sunburn). November’s lesson
covers tree seed collection and storage.<br />

<br />
<br />
The education program always corresponds with our community activities,
and we spent much of this month purchasing and distributing tools for
community nurseries. Each community that participates in the HTRIP
program receives basic support for its own nursery, each of which
produces between 4,000 and 7,000 trees each year. HTRIP supports
community nurseries by subsidizing the material cost of production of
the seedlings (the community members do all the work themselves) and by
providing simple equipment like picks, shovels, germinating pans, and
water drums. <br />

In October, we purchased all of the equipment for the 2011-2012
community nurseries, and we will finish distribution by the second week
of November. It is essential to begin community nurseries early in order
that trees be ready to plant as soon as the rains begin (the later they
are planted, the less they benefit from the rains, and therefore the
higher the mortality).<br />

<br />
With this in mind, we also began work on our central HTRIP nursery in
Deschapelles this month—and this year, it meant starting construction in
a new-to-us space on the Hospital campus which was unused and overgrown
until recently (see photo at right). The $13K project will include a
small water tower, a “depot” equipment storage space, a wide gate and
access road, and a small gazebo like building in which to hold staff meetings. We expect this new nursery space to meet all of HTRIP’s needs for the foreseeable future, and immediately it will allow us to increase our nursery production to more than 80,000 trees this
year at the same time that it allows us the space for a larger central
composting operation and a grasses program. This month, we finished most of the foundations (see photos). We expect to
finish the major construction work by the end of November and have
everything else in place and fully operational by the end of the year.<br />
<br />
Among the many guests and visitors we welcomed to Deschapelles this
month was Ross Bernet, a recent graduate of UCLA in environmental
science who completed an internship with HTRIP in the summer of 2010
researching the effects of geospatial human and ecological factors on
tree growth in HTRIP filial plots. This year, he will be contributing
more to project logistics and long-term management strategy while he
continues his research.<br />

<br />
Although we suffered from a shortened rainy season this summer, we’ve
been benefitting from an unusually wet “second rainy season”, so we hope
that tree mortality this year will not be as high as we originally
thought. HTRIP staff will soon begin the long process of surveying the
over eight hundred new “filial” tree plots this year, and we will know
for sure in the early months of 2012. <br />
<br />
We look forward to an exciting and productive November and thank you all for your continuing support,<br />

<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">This month was a quieter one for HTRIP’s Deschapelles activities. We continued our monthly educational program, collected broken tools and assembled community nursery inventories, and visited a mangrove restoration project the northern part of Haiti.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_nDpMYSXmN7tn9nC6en0GTanQe9ZeEkY_vt2AeZENiDd9y7vR0FEtVmC0K86FqwZZp9KhIhl3KOkZ-JhhkMSq0c5qAO2s88OCC_KCubJvbRmOiDsz3_vz8wxW_itJZmVRWSkEo5UZgg8/s1600/septhighlights.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_nDpMYSXmN7tn9nC6en0GTanQe9ZeEkY_vt2AeZENiDd9y7vR0FEtVmC0K86FqwZZp9KhIhl3KOkZ-JhhkMSq0c5qAO2s88OCC_KCubJvbRmOiDsz3_vz8wxW_itJZmVRWSkEo5UZgg8/s400/septhighlights.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">Paul Tompkins, a specialist in marine restoration ecology, left a grateful HTRIP staff in the middle of the month, but not before leading a trip to Bas Limbé, a small town on Haiti’s northern coast where USAID-DEED sponsored a mangrove restoration project that restored several kilometres of coastline before its funding ended this year. Before the trip, Paul gave a presentation for HTRIP staff about the importance of mangroves, which are not only an important habitat for fish but also an essential part of the overall ecological health of any coastal area. Just as trees prevent erosion from hillsides, mangroves act as a sediment trap that prevents topsoil from washing into the ocean—this type of erosion not only reduces fertility on land, but can suffocate coral reefs and disrupt marine ecosystems. Although the people in Bas Limbé work in a very different context than we do (on the beach instead of in the mountains), many of the concepts—like soil conservation—are the same for both of us, and the HTRIP staff benefited from seeing these same concepts applied in a different place. Other practices in Bas Limbé—like the “community watch” partnership with local authorities to prevent people from cutting down the new mangrove trees—may hold promise for the area that HTRIP serves. </span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">This month's education topic was compost. The infertility of the soil in HTRIP communities means that composting is essential for planting trees—and just about anything else—in rocky, inhospitable conditions. HTRIP has always taught composting, but this year we have undertaken an initiative to encourage and enable all of our community nurseries to build and maintain a large, central compost pile. October’s education topic is nursery construction and management, in preparation for the beginning of our central and community tree nurseries in November.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">While technicians were teaching and demonstrating composting techniques, they were also collecting broken tools and taking inventories of community nurseries. Just as we hope to begin construction on our new central nursery this month, we will purchase and distribute the nursery materials we provide each year to our community nurseries.</span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;">We look forward to a busy month ahead. It was a pleasure to see so many of you at the Friends of HAS Gala in early September, and we thank you all for your continuing support,</span><br />
